Every modern car has computers that run the engine and transmission: the DME or ECU (engine control unit) and the TCU (transmission control unit). Manufacturers protect the software inside them with encryption, write protection and locked bootloaders, so the module will not accept software from anyone else.
Tuning platforms such as bootmod3, MHD and MG Flasher work by writing new software to that module. When the protection blocks them, the module has to be unlocked first. An unlock removes that protection so a supported platform can read and flash the module.

Locked modules aren’t limited to one brand or one generation. Engine and transmission computers from many manufacturers use protection that has to be opened before a tune can be written. Common examples:
Why modules get locked
Manufacturers lock their computers to protect emissions compliance, warranty and software integrity. Over time protection has become stronger across the industry, with encrypted software, secure bootloaders and signed updates on engine and transmission modules from almost every brand. Whether a car needs an unlock depends on its module and production date, not just the make and model, which is why we confirm with your VIN before you order.
Common questions
Is an unlock the same as a tune?
No. An unlock opens the module. A tune is the software written to it afterward, and you buy that separately from a tuning platform.
Which cars can be unlocked?
Many makes and models, not just BMW. Send us your year, make, model, engine and VIN and we will confirm.
Do I have to ship my module?
It depends on the service. The BMW DME unlock can be done locally or by mail. The GPEC2A and TCU unlocks are local services in Brantford. Ask us about yours.
How do I know which unlock I need?
It depends on the module, not only the car. Send us your VIN and we will tell you.
Will an unlock affect my warranty?
It can. Modifying engine or transmission software may affect your vehicle warranty, so think about it before you unlock.
Can a dealer update undo an unlock?
Some shops report that dealer software updates can re-lock certain modules. Ask us about your specific car before you take it in for a software update.
Can something go wrong?
Any module programming carries some risk, which is why we confirm your exact module before you order. Contact us with questions before booking.
Unlock services and tunes are for off-road and closed-course use only. Modifying vehicle software may affect your warranty and emissions compliance.
